Dr. Souto is a specialist in Hematology at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona. He works in the Antithrombotic Treatment and Thromboembolic and Haemorrhagic Diseases Department. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Faculty of the same hospital and is responsible for the scientific projects GAIT 1 and 2 (Genetic Analysis of Idiopathic Thrombophilia), ACOA (Alternative Control of Oral Anticoagulation), RETROVE (Risk of Venous Thromboembolic Disease), MIRTO (Modelling the Individual Risk of Thrombosis in Oncology). 

He has been Founder and Scientific Director of Monitor Medical, a private company dedicated to the promotion of self-management of oral anticoagulation therapy with VKA drugs. He is part of the research team in 21 competitive research projects, in 7 of them as Principal Investigator; author of 160 scientific articles in indexed journals, in 35 as first author and 290 scientific communications to national and international congresses. 

Among his achievements, the ITACA (Investigación Tratamiento Alternativo en Cáncer) project stands out, designing clinical trials to assess the efficacy of the stimulation of innate immunity in the treatment of solid tumors with poor prognosis.
