Las clínicas veterinarias han incorporado en los últimos 15 años otros métodos en el diagnóstico por imagen más allá de la radiología. Actualmente, casi todas las clínicas incluyen un ecógrafo en su equipamiento básico, y cada vez son más los hospitales que incorporan TAC o RM para diagnosticar.  

Con la ecografía se incorporaron grandes avances para la visualización en vivo de órganos y vasos de una forma sencilla, inocua para el paciente, transformándose en una herramienta imprescindible en el ejercicio de la clínica de pequeños animales. El uso del TAC, por su parte, supuso un paso más moderno en el uso de la radiología, siendo una combinación del uso de rayos X con una adquisición de imágenes mediante la computarización de estas.  

La resonancia magnética nuclear se desarrolló con el objetivo de obtener información sobre la estructura y la composición del cuerpo a analizar mediante el uso de campos magnéticos. Esta técnica se ha abierto paso en la neurología, siendo el método de elección a la hora de estudiar encéfalo y médula espinal, llegando a evaluar el total de estas partes del organismo cuando otros métodos tradicionales no podían.  

El aumento en los últimos años de más especies exóticas en los hogares ha provocado la necesidad de que muchas pruebas diagnósticas que hasta hace poco no se consideraban aplicables a estos animales, estén disponibles y se utilicen rutinariamente. El papel de la radiología convencional en medicina de aves, pequeños mamíferos y reptiles está siendo cada vez más importante debido a que se ha establecido como una prueba de diagnóstico fundamental en veterinaria.
