Muchos procedimientos quirúrgicos van a realizarse en un ambiente no limpio, en la propia granja, con congéneres alrededor, suciedad, insectos, viento y con el propio paciente moviéndose o intentando cocearte (cirugía de pie).
El cirujano de rumiantes va a enfrentarse a numerosas situaciones con complejidad diversa, teniendo que realizar castraciones, resolver partos distócicos mediante cesáreas o hacer una abomasopexia incluso mediante laparoscopia.
La cirugía de los animales de abasto ha progresado enormemente disponiendo de los avances tecnológicos como la laparoscopia, teloscopía o el diagnóstico mediante ultrasonidos incluso en cirugía de campo.
Es fundamental destacar la importancia del bienestar animal, ya asumido por veterinarios, ganaderos y el público en general. Debemos conocer los fundamentos del dolor y su manejo adecuado mediante las técnicas de sedación y analgesia y los procedimientos quirúrgicos necesarios para resolver la patología preexistente.
En este módulo se revisan los principios de la cirugía de rumiantes y se repasan los procedimientos diagnósticos, indicaciones quirúrgicas, técnicas operatorias y manejo postoperatorio en cirugía digestiva, de piel, ocular, ombligo, genital masculino y femenino, y del aparato urinario.
