Estudiar la iconografía es poder entender la historia en sus diversas representaciones, comprender su prevalencia o ausencia en un tiempo y lugar determinados, para comparar los diferentes períodos y para interpretar lo simbólico. En la iconografía cristiana, se testifica la unidad de la tradición eclesiástica y de la fe de las épocas en que fueron producidos. Se representa en una forma tangible el mensaje cristiano. 

Cada pieza de arte cristiano, sin importar el medio, o el personaje, evento, pasaje bíblico o concepto específico que represente, suele contener símbolos identificativos de la rama del cristianismo que lo produjo. La iconografía se centra en los mecanismos identificativos internos: cada rasgo facial, cada color, cada sutil gesto de las manos, cada objeto o parte del entorno, están convencionalmente fijados y repetidos a lo largo de la milenaria historia del arte en el cristianismo.
